The primary objective in the design of these systems is that the energy balance is zero. The urban systems are used as a battery to cover the peak demand periods, reverting to them in valley periods.

Secondarily, the visible elements of these systems are integrated into the architectural composition. The solar panels, wind turbines, satellite dishes, cisterns, tarpaulins, and the vines and pergolas, form part of the whole image and composition. They are elements with which to construct.
